Dear RFA Members,
Senator Jon Lindsey of Houston has introduced SB 1790 which is a bill that calls for a ban on the use of croaker less than 10 inches in length. Under this bill, a person would be subject to a penalty for using such bait. There is no reasonable justification for such a ban. This bill, if passed, would be the very first ban on the use of particular bait on the Texas coast. This would set a dangerous precedent that could be followed by more bans to come.
As you know, recreational fishing makes a major contribution to the economy and quality of life in Texas. Many Texas anglers like to use croaker as live bait especially during the summer months when other bait can be scarce. Therefore, this bill could have very negative implications for anglers, coastal fishing businesses and the tourist industry in Texas.
If you agree that we should not slide down the slippery slope of banning certain baits, I encourage you to let your voice be heard by filling out the enclosed postcard and sending it to Senator Ken Armbrister, Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee. Voicing your opposition to this bill will help safeguard your rights as a saltwater angler.
Sincerely,
Jim Smarr
State Chairman
